Why Thailand?
Thailand has emerged as a key player in the global LED lighting market. The country is home to Southeast Asia’s largest LED lighting exhibition, attracting manufacturers and suppliers worldwide. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 23.38% from 2022 to 2027.
The Thai economy is expected to grow at 2.9% in 2022 and 4.3% in 2023. Its GDP is ranked 8th in Asia and 2nd in Southeast Asia. Additionally, driven by the rising middle-income population, Thailand’s smartphone users proportion is higher than that of Southeast Asia (about 79% of the population in 2022). With the increasing number of smartphone users, the adoption of smart devices and connected lighting continue to boost the demand for the smart lighting segment.
The Thai government strongly supports the adoption of LEDs, with key government agencies such as the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) promoting the use of LED lighting in Thailand.
Rapid urbanisation and the rise of industrial and logistic activities drive economic growth by putting pressure on infrastructure and demanding higher power requirements in commercial and residential facilities. This high demand results in both public and private investment, accelerating the adoption and development of LED with longer shelf life, lower energy consumption and reduced maintenance requirements, further attracting more entry of multinational players.
Based on applications, Outdoor applications of LEDs are anticipated to gain traction because of the development of smart cities and government measures to replace street lights with LED Lamps. The market for LEDs is also likely to be burgeoned by smart lighting solutions which facilitate functions such as timer setting and motion-detecting sensors across commercial and residential spaces. The horticulture LED lighting market is expected to grow steadily due to increased demand for controlled environment agriculture (CEA) practices and SSL technology. With the surge in awareness regarding sustainability with people becoming more conscious of healthy and organic food, there is a massive increase in demand for vertical farms and the cultivation of crops. The fruits, vegetables and cannabis segments are expected to witness the largest share in the horticulture LED lighting market during the forecast period of 2022-2027. The legalisation of cannabis which cannabis being a high–value crop, further boosts the cultivation of cannabis with booming demand for Horticulture LED lighting.
Due to all these factors, Thailand is now one of Southeast Asia’s most famous markets for the LED & smart lighting industry trade fairs. LED EXPO THAILAND 2023 strategically taps into this growing market and, at the same time, serves as the industry gathering platform not just for Thailand but also for the surrounding ASEAN region.
